Look around your home. You know there are things you’ve been meaning to do but haven’t gotten around to yet. Take on one or all of these homeowner resolutions this year and make your Tampa Bay home better, more comfortable, and more affordable.
Cut Your Energy Costs
If you’ve got the budget and home for it, upgrade your home in the greenest possible way. Add solar panels. Choose the most energy-efficient HVAC system. Replace your roof, add insulation, or get new windows. All of these things will make your home more energy efficient and cut your energy costs.
Don’t have that kind of cash? The small things make a difference too. Replace your standard light bulbs with LED bulbs. Swap your old thermostat for a new, smart one that you can control from your phone or web browser. Set your heater down a degree or two and your air up a degree or two to save money when it’s hot or cold.
Organize and Declutter
Even if you have no plans to pack up and move this year, you can probably name that one closet or area of your home you dread ever having to pack. For homeowners with smaller spaces or less storage, you especially know what it’s like to be overrun with a bunch of stuff.
Make 2018 the year you get organized and declutter your life and your home. If you haven’t touched it, thought about it, or used it in a year or more, it may be time to get rid of it. All the sentimental things sitting in a worn out box could be put in a stackable plastic bin that’s less likely to fall apart and easier to store. And when all else fails, consider a small storage unit to declutter and make your living space feel bigger.
Check Your Home Insurance
How long has it been since you thought about your homeowner’s insurance policy? If the answer is anything longer than a year, it’s time to give it some thought. This is especially important if the value of your home has increased or you’ve made major updates to your home.
You want to make sure your insurance policy can cover the real costs to replace your possessions or rebuild your home. Values have increased over the years as have building costs so the policy limit you have now may not be enough to rebuild if the worst happens. Talk to a qualified insurer to check your current policy or get a new quote.
Fix the Small Stuff
Just like all the clutter you’ve accumulated over the years (and try to ignore) those small projects aren’t going away either. The light switch that doesn’t work? Fix it. The wobbly ceiling fan? Adjust it. Make this the year you tackle all the small stuff that needs fixing.
Maintaining your home isn’t just good for stopping small problems from becoming big ones. It’s also one less thing you have to worry about when you decide to sell your home. If everything works properly and is in good condition, you’ll only have to worry about cleaning, staging, and a fresh coat of paint when you’re ready to sell.
Get Your HVAC Serviced
Sure, the Tampa weather means we don’t need to use our heater a lot in winter, but come summer, we’ll all have our air conditioner running at full speed. We all know we need to get our HVAC systems serviced each year, but few of us actually do it.
The last thing you want is for your heater or AC to go out when you need it most. Having it looked over at least once a year will keep small problems from turning into big ones. Your system will also run more efficiently which keeps your energy costs down which will matter a lot by the time the heat and humidity arrive.
You don’t have to do all these things in one week or one month, but make a plan now to tackle the big and small projects this year. Your budget will thank you, and your home will be more comfortable as a result.
